Catherine's Yearly Festive Service of Carols Spotlights Unsung Heroes
Catherine, Princess of Wales, is presiding over her yearly festive musical service at Westminster Abbey, with attendees featuring dignitaries, stars, and everyday helpers who have helped their communities.
The sizable congregation will listen to a selection of traditional hymns, orchestral pieces, and literary excerpts from performers including Chiwetel Ejiofor and Kate Winslet.
Centred Around Compassion and Love
The focus of the concert, held in the atmospheric historic church on the afternoon, is kindness and showing love to others.
Among the guests will be Anna and Jonathan Cordiner, whose daughter died of a brain cancer, and who founded an organisation, Kayleigh's Wee Stars, to aid parents with a terminally ill child.
"The time, care and compassion you give, often without fanfare or recognition, and without any thought of thanks or praise, make an extraordinary difference to the circumstances of individuals," wrote Catherine in a note prior to the carol service.
Carefully Paced Reappearance
The Princess of Wales is continuing her own gradual return to public life after her cancer diagnosis and chemotherapy, in November making her first public speech for two years, in which she reflected on recognising the "discreet, frequently unseen labour of caregivers".
Music and Opportunity
Those coming to the Abbey will be entertained by budding artists aided by the charitable trust Future Talent, set up with the help of the Duchess of Kent to broaden opportunities for music lessons.
An 18-year-old named Carys Wood, who plays the trumpet and is from southwest Wales, has been supported by the organisation, with funding assisting with instruments, tuition, and transportation expenses - and she said it was "incredible" to be performing at the concert.
"Musical pursuits are frequently pricey," Carys said. She is now a student at the prestigious music academy, and added that "all people deserve the chance" to cultivate their performance abilities.
A Family Affair
Her younger sibling Eliza, aged 11, who plays the euphonium, will likewise attend the Abbey. "It's unbelievable that I get to perform here in front of so many important people," she said.
Attending the service will be people from various age groups.
That will feature young Saphia Turner, nine, winner of a young hero award, who produces drawings and undertakes charity feats to raise money for food banks.
Festive Decor and Performances
The Abbey has been festooned with handcrafted festive wreaths, with celebrity baker Mary Berry and floral designer Simon Lycett assisting in their creation.
The musical lineup includes Katie Melua, the Abbey's own choir and a Cornish sea shanty group, the group Fisherman's Friends, who said the opportunity to perform was "a dream come true."
The festive event titled 'Together at Christmas' will be televised and shown on a major network on Christmas Eve.
